TCG Burgazada Ensures the Security of the Eastern Mediterranean!
The reconnaissance and surveillance mission of TCG BURGAZADA in the Eastern Mediterranean has officially commenced. The Ministry of National Defense made a statement on the topic on its Twitter account, formerly known as X. In its announcement, it stated, ‘On the first day of the Maritime Guardian Operation, boarding exercises were conducted by SAT commandos.’ Additionally, it did not forget to include visuals related to the training in its post.
The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) reported on February 5, 2024, that TCG Burgazada had taken over the command of NATO Allied Maritime Command’s Maritime Guardian Operation 2024-1 in Mersin port. It also added that TCG Burgazada had begun reconnaissance, surveillance, and patrol duties in the Eastern Mediterranean.
TCG Burgazada is the third ship of the MİLGEM Project. The construction of the ship began on December 17, 2014, at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard Command. The ship first met the sea on June 18, 2016. The ship, with a length of 99.5 meters and a width of 14.4 meters, weighs 2,400 tons.
TCG Burgazada has a transit speed and a cruising range of 3,500 nautical miles, or 6,485 kilometers, without replenishment and fuel support. It also has the capability to stay at sea for 10 days. This allows it to transit to the Gulf of Aden in 9 days at an economical speed of 15 knots, or 28 kilometers per hour, and in 5 days at speeds exceeding 29 knots, or 54 kilometers per hour. Additionally, engineers have built TCG Burgazada with the necessary platform, hangar, and comprehensive support equipment for a 10-ton helicopter.
Burgazada Corvette is capable of conducting surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, air defense warfare, reconnaissance, surveillance, command and control, and asymmetric defense warfare missions. This will significantly contribute to the strength of the Turkish Navy.
